Nestled high above the bustling city on the 24th floor of the Nhow Hotel, Selva Restaurant is a haven for design enthusiasts and culinary adventurers alike. This innovative space, designed by the renowned El Equipo Creativo, offers more than just remarkable Latin American cuisine with a tropical twist—it presents an immersive experience that seamlessly blends exquisite design with gastronomic delight.
The Design Journey of Selva Restaurant
From Industrial to Oasis
Originally a cold and industrial space, Selva Restaurant was transformed into a lush, inviting retreat. The restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling glass façade, a striking feature designed by the architectural team OMA under the guidance of Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, provided an awe-inspiring view of Amsterdam’s outskirts. Yet, the challenge lay in creating a warm, jungle-like environment that contrasted with the city’s harsh exterior.
A Vision of Organic Beauty
The design proposal for Selva aimed to capture the essence of a tropical rainforest. Set against a lush green backdrop, the restaurant features organic-inspired flooring and abundant vegetation. Textured wooden elements with undulating shapes serve as both benches and dividers, evoking the sensation of walking through a dense forest. These curvilinear pieces create winding paths that invite exploration and soften the space’s initial harshness.
An Enchanting Atmosphere
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a colorful, plant-filled ceiling and a suspended, reflective element resembling a tropical river. Sparkling glass lamps and diverse vegetation add layers and depth, creating a vibrant, jungle-like atmosphere. Reflective finishes in metal, glass, and ceramics enhance the tropical ambiance, reminiscent of water and perfectly complementing the space’s dynamic glass façade.
Vibrant Hues and Inviting Spaces
The interior comes alive with vibrant colors inspired by tropical fruits, birds, and flowers, often seen in Latin American art. The bar, with its undulating front covered in colorful tiles, extends from the entrance to the private dining area, energizing the entire space. Here, guests can witness the lively activity centered around the open kitchen, fostering a sense of community and engagement.
Natural materials such as wicker, rope, and wood panels partially cover the glass façade, filtering sunlight and creating cozy shadows. These elements echo the feeling of being surrounded by leaves or branches, adding rhythm and warmth to the modern enclosure.
A Culinary and Visual Delight
Selva Restaurant is more than a place to dine; it’s an experience that captivates the senses. The thoughtful integration of design and culinary excellence offers a unique escape from the urban hustle, surprising guests with its natural, colorful, and lush environment—all while providing stunning views of Amsterdam.
